 Adolescents

Teens are experiencing stress at all time highs. Untamed stress impairs not only judgement, memory and impulse control but also our compassionate and empathetic instincts. Anxiety often makes us oblivious to others' feelings, reduces perspective taking and increases self-centered behaviors. We must build in time for kids to decompress, learn their stress triggers, and teach them healthy ways to manage their emotions. Adolescents need a safe, accepting environment where they can learn about themselves and practice new skills. I use interactive modalities like narrative, art, bibliotherapy, psychodrama, and writing to deepen and enrich the therapeutic process. These specific therapies help to build coping skills so they can better handle negative experiences and emotions. Teenagers need to be resilient in the face of adversity by knowing how to use coping strategies. Everyone is different and I help them figure out what skills will work that are unique to their personality, style of communication and interests. Covid-19 has posed significant challenges to teens and they need a safe and confidential place to explore all the changes they have experienced.

Adults

We often get in our own way without even noticing that issues we have struggled with for years continue to crop up holding us hostage. The same things keep happening over and over if we don't do the work. Sometimes frustration, apathy and discomfort in our current circumstances can cloud the lens through which we see the world. Joy increases when people learn how to be mindful, how to think differently, and how to sort through painful or abusive experiences. Humans are meaning-makers. We are designed to create stories out of our experiences. I help people examine their patterns of thinking and behaving in ways that are useful and productive. Having a supportive guide can make the difference between stagnation and thriving.  My work with adults is creative, interactive and collaborative. Clients are encouraged to share feedback about how they feel about our work together. I am on the journey with clients. I talk with people - not at people. This shared dialogue is the reason I look forward to work every day. Open hearts and minds are the foundation for healing and transformation.
